Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search Scholarship is one among the most prestigious scholarship in India awarded in the field of Basic Science (hons), Engineering and Medicine for the students of West Bengal. The Scholarship is provided on the basis of a talent search examination by Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search .

1. When did you get JBNSTS?

2007-2008, my first year in college.

2. How did you get to know about it?
The organizers came to IIT Kharagpur to advertise for it. They held a information session and posted leaflets in all residence halls.
3. How did you prepare for the exam ?
There isn’t really much one can do to prepare for the exam. The exam tests your creativity and imagination more than your knowledge. The exam had 8 questions, 2 each from physics, math, biology and chemistry. We could choose to answer any 2 of them in 24 hours. We stayed in the dorms they have in kolkata and they provided us with meals and snacks.`The following day we appeared for an half an hour defense cum interview where we would discuss our solutions to the two problems of our choice.
4. How did you prepare for the interview?
They had one interview solely based on the work from the 24 hour long exam. The second interview was both technical and behavioral. The technical questions involved explaining certain scenarios or results. They were not that difficult for someone with a good knowledge of 12 th standard physics, maths, bio or chem.
5. How was the overall experience?

My experience was great. I had lots of fun during the exam. We were some 30 odd people staying together in the dorm. The problems were great and open ended with no “correct” solution. They were mostly judging the student’s abilities to think about a problem in depth rather than a quick solution.
6. What benefits did you get out of it?

The program carried a cash award in terms of a monthly scholarship and a book grant. However, since JBNSTS is one of the qualifiers for the INSPIRE scholarship, I switched to the later after an year. I still continued to attend the Talent Enrichment Programs (TEP) they used to organize. Those mostly involved summer camps, visits to some scientific organization or talks by eminent researchers.
7. Any such scholarship?

The award carries a monthly scholarship. Not sure about the current financial value of that scholarship.
8. any gyan?
Its a fun program to participate and a great addition to your resume. They have a very talented and well established alumni pool who are quite actively involved with the institution. Some of the programs they organize are really stimulating and inspired me to pursue a career in research.

      Hi Swastik
You should stick to your current syllabus.
The questions are mainly analytical. You will need to apply knowledge from different fields to get the right answers.

Hey there. I am thinking of taking the JBNSTS exam this year, the one meant for 1st year science hons, medical and engineering students.
Does the exam adhere to any syllabus as such or should I just brush up on my 11th and 12th standard syllabus?
